I was watching the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup opening race in Sölden sit in the lounge bar of our beloved Hotel Milano Alpen Resort Meeting & Spa with all my skiing-addicted friends. It was almost 1pm when the second manche finally started.
We followed every athlete, thinking about what would happen. Federica Brignone, the Italian best female skier, was in first position after the first manche, that we didn’t get to see as we were all at school. It was exciting. Bloody exciting.
It has been ages since the last time an Italian female skier wins in giant slalom. We were looking forward for our national team’s amazing comeback. And Federica fully filled our great expectation, winning the goal with almost 1 second of advantage on Mikaela Shiffrin, the US outstanding athlete, who is only two years older than us.
It has been great. Her skiing was passionate, we were all speechless. That was the Federica we wanted to see, that was the athlete who had been fighting years after years for a win that seemed to never come. That was her. Simply her and her rhythm.
We were all proud to be Italian. We all cheered on Italy. Because it doesn’t matter if we are not as powerful as the US, if the country is still facing the economical crisis or whatever: when it comes to sport, we all feel that love for our country.
